Hello Veena. I am East Indian from Tam talao vasai I mean my parents are from there. My husband is from Irla. We live in Muscat.
Welcome to my blog, Basilia. My mom had cousins in Vasai and my mom maiden home is in Irla. Lots of cousins are all in Irla. Thanks
Do they eat a lot of marzapan in India? One time i had an Indian friend over to my house. We were standing around in the kitchen chatting, lost track of time, then all of a sudden, it was time for us to leave and go look at a house he wanted to rent. I had to use the restroom before we left, I let him know id be right back and excused myself. While i was in the rest room, i heard him ask me if it would be alright if he tried one of my candies. I said, “Sure help yourself to what ever you’d like.” While i was washing my hands i kept racking my brain as to what kind if candy it was that i had out there, as i couldnt remember buying any for quite some time. I cane out from the back of the house and started to tell him, that i didnt know what candy he was talking about, so it might be old. Then i look up and see him taking a bite of one of my dishwasher detergent cubes. He made the most hilarious face once he figured out what it was. Started stipping it out into the trash can. I got him a glass of water, and said, “Ya, they do look like they would be dellishious if they were actually edible.” They were a colorful blue and white swirl with a candy-like red dot on the top.” They were individually wrapped in some kind of thin casing that melted away when the hot water hit it. He said in India that have candy that looked just like that. I asked him what the candy tasted like and he told me they were marzipan.
Yes, being British colony Marzipan was bought to use by the British I believe.
We do love marzipan in India. But marzipan in India is mostly made with cashew nuts compared to almonds because we do grow cashew in India and they are more affordable.
It is very popular during Christmas and Easter. Marzipan Easter eggs are very popular and so are little candies just like the one you described above.
Hi Veena…your recipes and presentations are fantastic and awesome. I tried the uncooked marzipan. I faced this problem…they kept sweating. Can you explain what happened.
Michelle. Sounds like you live in a hot and humid place. Marzipan is very high in sugar so it automatically tends to melt in warm climates. The best way is to let them dry for a while before you wrap or store in an airtight container. Hope this helps
What would be the shelf life of this uncooked marzipan??
Hey Chris. I’d say about 10 days if stored properly. I have kept them for longer too (more than 2 weeks when they go overseas as gifts to the family – they do stay well)
