Ingredients

  • 1 cup Yellow split lentils moong dal or toor dal
  • 3 cups Water
  • 1 med Onion finely chopped
  • 2 med Green chilies
  • 2 inch Fresh ginger grated
  • 2 large Garlic cloves mined
  • ½ tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp Garam masala powder
  • tsp Asafetida hing (optional)
  • 2 tbs Ghee or vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup Fresh coriander leaves chopped (for garnish)
  • ½ tsp Salt

Instructions

  • Lentils – Add the rinsed lentils and water in a pressure cooker or a large pot. Cook until the lentils become soft and mushy. If using a pressure cooker, cook for about 3-4 whistles. If using a pot, cook for approximately 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once the lentils are cooked, whisk them until they become smooth and creamy. Set aside.

    1 med Onion, 2 med Green chilies, 2 inch Fresh ginger, 2 large Garlic cloves, ½ tsp Cumin seeds, 1 tsp Mustard seeds, ⅛ tsp Asafetida, 2 tbs Ghee or vegetable oil
  • Spices – Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and mushy. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well and cook for another minute.
    1 tsp Turmeric powder, ½ tsp Garam masala powder
  • Gravy – Pour the cooked lentils into the pan with the spice mixture. Please make sure to stir well to combine all the ingredients. Simmer the dal fry for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
